Ringtones and Their Origin
Gone are the days of the ringing, rasping and the boring ringtones of yore; the days of all encompassing, captivating ringtones are here. The mellifluous sounds are coming forth from the cell phone of anybody, be it a person belonging to the top echelons of the society or others who are not that well off. There is a varied and wide choice for anyone to self from. Ringtones of all sounds one can imagine can be found these days. The personality of the owner can often be understood by hearing the ring tone his cell phone is blurting out.
The first ring tone format sold in the market was the Ring Tone Text Transfer Language (RTTTL). In this initial offering, ringtones could be produced by using a text based format, which at that time, was a novelty. With the passing of a short period of time, monophonic ringtones which were based on RTTTL was created by a Finland based company. Notes of different frequencies were arranged here in a special way in order to create a continuous stream of sounds. However, with this type, only one sound could be played at one time.
Natural human inquisitiveness and quest for something better resulted in the forthcoming of another sort of ring tone called the polyphonic tones into existence. This system was more complicated and gave better results as sixteen different sounds, but all produced by musical instruments, could be played at a single moment. The level of the sound produced reached musical quality. However, the scope for further development was minimal as only instrumental music could be played. The polyphonic tones, which came out in the year 2002 became a roaring success and can be played by most of the latest hand sets available these days.
What followed was a phenomenon called the true tones, which has taken the music industry by storm. Based on audio formats such as MP3, AAC and WMA, the true tones became the mainstay of the music track industry. Hand set manufacturers, quickly realizing its scope in the industry started incorporating facilities in their cell phones which could play these tones. The result of this act was the birth and growth of a caller tone format based on these tones.
The superior sound quality and variety offered by true tones resulted in more and more people getting into the act of downloading or transferring these tones into their hand sets by employing different means.
The fast increase in the demand for true tones has resulted in the amazing growth of a new billion dollar industry, the ringtone business. The novelty of ideas and scope for customization made people rush after the latest ringtones in droves. Business watchers in search of opportunities quickly saw this as a venue for success and many other players also joined the fray after seeing the success of the initial players in the field.
At the initial stages in the history of cell phones, some third party businesses were roped in by hand set manufacturers to manufacture and incorporate ringtones for every handset. However, the role of these middle level players got marginalized as true tones came along.
True tones have made their footprints not only in the hand set industry, but also the music track industry as well. A recent trend seen is that real tones, based on a music track are sold in the market even before the track itself is published. This speaks volumes about significance of ringtones in the music track industry as well.
Cell phone manufacturers have also got their act together by publishing new tones for all their models. Due to the stupendous increase in sales volumes, companies are in a position to sell ring tones at a cheaper rate, resulting in more and more people getting hooked.
